Background

Penguin Random House is a company formed by the merger of book publishers Random House and Penguin Group. Penguin Random House markets itself as “the world’s first truly global trade book” publisher. Penguin Random House employs circa 10,000 people globally and publishes approximately 15,000 titles annually under its 250 divisions and imprints.

Brief

BORN was approached to develop an Author Portal in order to consolidate all it’s authors data into one central repository. PRH divisions including Random House, International Trade House, Transworld Books and Ebury Publishing.

Goals

PRH wanted BORN to develop an easy-to-use dashboard where authors could: view detailed sales information plus bestseller and review history for every title, download book jackets, royalty statements, sold subsidiary rights. In addition, the solution would have the ability for users to browse marketing tips, download the PRH Facebook App, and sign up for webinars to learn about the latest trends from experts.

Challenge

The portal had to provide authors with functionality that would be useful to them, but not overtly complex to need online training or support to navigate through the tools.

Strategy and Insight

The aim of the project was to encourage authors to self-serve, through a well-designed interface. The dashboard also needed to host current events, topical news and other sector information such as Bestseller Rankings and Customer Reviews.

Solutions

BORN developed an device agnostic cloud-based solution to enable authors to access commercial data, Royalty Statements and Subsidiary Rights information relating to the performance of their titles (printed, eBooks and audiobook). Finally, a Resource section was build to connect readers, through articles and videos, archives, industry news pages and community contacts.

Outcome

Homepage Sales Data was a critical addition to the site which allowed data was to be made available right on the Author Portal homepage. In addition, this page housed the latest weekly unit sales figures for individual titles and all of an author’s titles in aggregate.

Long-Term Value

BORN continues to support PRH with image retouching, typesetting, book formatting and cover art-working.

Challenge

Stylist still wanted to retain its print edition, so their digital content had to be harmonious in tone of voice as well as overall style and aesthetics.

Strategy & Insight

With the execution of an effective content management tool, Stylist was able to take its first steps into digital publishing while still remaining true to their print heritage.

Solutions

BORN implemented its new content production tool, Cito, to handle Stylist’s requirements. Cito takes the final editorial copy and images directly from the source and applies predefined style guidelines to align with the print edition.

Outcome

Readers are now able to consume Stylist’s content on the move as well as in the comfort of their homes or offices. Our content management tool, Cito, ensures bite-size content is delivered on mobile, tablet, or desktop.

Long-Term Value

A gradual migration to a digital-first initiative enabled Stylist to measure and analyze its content performance, delivering insightful metrics for informed decisions around future content deployment.

Solution Overview

Our solution involved a headless commerce architecture aligned to ODA architecture, with Magento 2 as the common commerce platform and a Drupal-based web solution on top. One of the hallmarks of the solution was its three-dimensional stability and unified catalog, allowing new commerce capabilities, new channels, and volume growth with a clear and consistent structure.

Highlights

Over 3.5 million registered users across digital channels in 8 months since launch. There was a 150% increase in transactions on the site, along with a 300% increase in conversion rate, a 10% increase in average order value, and a 30% reduction in bounce rate. 100% inventory was sold during the new iPhone and Note 10 preorder.

Effectiveness

Digi saw a 50% reduction in customer issues with transaction volume increased by 20%, 60% of APIs reused across channels, 40% reduction in time to market, and an NPS score of 100 and quarterly CSAT receiving a 10/10.
